Yarra Valley Map: Where the Wineries Sit and Where Each Tour Starts

The valley covers 3,130 km², and the cellar doors are spread across it. The tours start in half a dozen places. Choosing between Yarra Valley wine tasting tours? Find the start and the stops before you book.

Where the valley starts and ends

The Yarra Valley is a wine region, not one site. Wine Australia measures it at 3,130 km², with 2,837 hectares under vine. It climbs from 17 metres above sea level to 1,338 metres in the ranges that close it in.

Lilydale is the gateway. Metro's train line ends there, and the rail trail leaves it for Warburton, 40 km away. The wine towns you meet on a tour are Coldstream, Yering, Yarra Glen, Gruyere, Dixons Creek and Healesville. Wine Yarra Valley puts the whole region about an hour's drive from central Melbourne.

The wineries and stops on the map

These are the addresses each place publishes. Group them by town and you can see which stops a day can link without long drives.

Balgownie Estate, Payten & Jones, Greenstone Vineyards and Yering Farm Wines are also tour stops. What each pours, and the half-day route, are on Yarra Valley wineries.

Coldstream and the Maroondah Highway

Coldstream is where you find the most cellar doors close together. Chandon and Rochford Wines both stand on the Maroondah Highway. St Hubert's is on St Huberts Road and Tokar Estate on Maddens Lane. Yarra Valley Dairy and Yering Station carry Yering addresses.

The Maroondah Highway carries on to Healesville, and past the town it becomes Black Spur Drive. If you drive yourself, the highway is the line you plan along.

Gruyere, Yarra Glen and Healesville

Gruyere is the half-day country. Soumah sits at 18 Hexham Road under the Warramate Hills, and Helen & Joey Estate at 12-14 Spring Lane. Soumah puts itself ten minutes from Healesville.

Yarra Glen has the Yarra Valley Chocolaterie on Old Healesville Road, which most full days visit. Healesville has Four Pillars Gin on Lilydale Road and Healesville Sanctuary on Badger Creek Road, just past the town centre.

Warburton and the redwoods

Warburton is at the far end of the rail trail. The Warburton Waterwheel Visitor Information Centre is at 3400 Warburton Highway. The Cement Creek redwoods are about 15 minutes' drive further, on Cement Creek Road off Woods Point Road. Only the redwoods tour comes this far.

That tour gives you 45 minutes in the village and 45 minutes in the forest. Then it turns back towards Soumah or Healesville Sanctuary, whichever option you booked. If you drive out on your own, arrive at the forest early, because the car parks are small.

Where each tour starts

Check the start against where you sleep. A 9:00 departure from Flinders Street is easy from a CBD hotel and hard from the suburbs.

If you are staying east of the city, look at the half-day tours first: you can board them at Lilydale instead of Arts Centre Melbourne. The bike tour starts at Woori Yallock, in the valley itself, with a free pickup at Lilydale station. If you want a slow morning in Melbourne, the Chandon and kangaroo tour leaves Federation Square at 11:30.

Planning a day on your own, town by town

If you drive yourself, pick one or two towns rather than the whole valley. You spend the day tasting, not on the road, and your sober driver has an easier time.

• A Coldstream day: Chandon from 11am, then Rochford, St Hubert's or Tokar Estate. You stay close to the Maroondah Highway all day.
• A Gruyere day: Soumah and Helen & Joey Estate both pour from 10am, seven days. You can add Four Pillars in Healesville, which Soumah puts ten minutes away.
• A Healesville day: the sanctuary from 9am, then gin at Four Pillars, which stays open to 9pm on Fridays and Saturdays.
• A Warburton day: the redwoods before the car parks fill at about 10am, then the rail trail in the afternoon.

Check each place's hours on the day you go; restaurants and smaller cellar doors keep shorter weeks.
