You can reach the edge of the Yarra Valley by train, but the wineries are spread across farmland beyond it. This guide sets out every way to taste without driving, what each one costs you in time and money, and when a tour is the simpler answer. Can you visit Yarra Valley wineries without a car?

Yes, but plan it. The valley covers 3,130 km² and holds over eighty wineries. They sit around Coldstream, Yarra Glen, Healesville, Gruyere and Dixons Creek, not in one village you can walk. Public transport reaches the edge, and a bus reaches Healesville Sanctuary.

So you have four real choices: the train and bus, a bike on the rail trail, a sober driver, or a tour that collects you. Each is set out below, with a table that compares them.

The Lilydale line

Metro's Lilydale line runs from Flinders Street through Ringwood and Mooroolbark to Lilydale. Lilydale station is the closest the train comes to the valley. From there, the cellar doors are a drive away.

Can you go beyond Lilydale by bus?

For one place, yes. Zoos Victoria tells visitors to take the train to Lilydale and then bus 685 to Healesville Sanctuary, on Badger Creek Road. The sanctuary opens 9am to 5pm every day, and adult entry is A$58.

For the wineries, a bus is harder. Cellar doors sit along side roads and hills, and you would need to time every leg. Check the timetable before you rely on a bus for the ride back.

By bike on the rail trail

The Lilydale to Warburton Rail Trail follows the old railway line for 40 km. It is unpaved and shared by walkers, cyclists and horse riders. It starts in Lilydale, where the train line ends.

A long ride and a tasting do not mix well on your own. The guided bike tour with lunch solves that. You ride the trail for two hours, then taste at a vineyard with wood-fired pizza, Soumah, Yarra Valley Dairy and Yering Station. It costs $253, takes eight riders at most, and is for adults.

With a sober driver

If a friend will stay sober, a car gives you the most freedom. You can spend two hours at one cellar door, add Four Pillars in Healesville, or stop at the Yarra Valley Chocolaterie on the way home. Check each winery's hours first: Tokar Estate closes at 4pm on weekdays, and Greenstone opens Thursday to Monday only.

Carry photo ID whoever drives. Staff check anyone who looks under 25, and supplying alcohol to someone under 18 is illegal in Victoria.

The cost is that one person does not taste. Every stop pours, and the driver sits each one out. For many groups, that is the argument for a tour.

Which tours start at Lilydale?

The half-day tours and the bike tour can collect you at the valley's edge. The half-day winery tour has a Lilydale boarding option at the station bus stop, and spends about 45 minutes at each of three wineries for $90. The small-group half day boards at 2 William Street East, gives you an hour at each winery and brings you back to Lilydale.

The bike tour offers free pickup at Lilydale station, or meets at the Woori Yallock Station car park at 10:00. If you are staying in the valley, it collects you for A$30 per person.

Which tours pick you up at your hotel?

The grazing tour collects you from one of six central hotels between 8:00 and 9:00: the Hotel Windsor, the Europa, The Victoria, The Savoy, the Rendezvous and Crown Promenade. It costs $133 and tastes wine at Rochford, cheese at Coldstream Dairy, and gin with pizza at Stag Lane Distillery.

The private day collects you from your accommodation, in Melbourne or in the valley, at 9:30. Most other tours meet at a kerb in the city, so a short walk or tram ride is part of your morning.

What does a tour add?

A tour solves the driving, the order of the stops and the booking at each cellar door. Every guest can taste. The tastings are in the fare, and on the small-group half day the cellar door fees are too.

What you give up is time. You spend 30 minutes to an hour at each stop, and the bus leaves when it leaves. If you want to linger, go with a driver. If you want to taste freely, take a tour.

Where are the cellar doors?

Can you see Healesville Sanctuary without a car?

Yes. Take the train to Lilydale, then bus 685 to the sanctuary. Adults pay A$58 and concessions A$44 in 2026. Children aged 4 to 15 pay A$29 on weekdays and enter free on weekends and holidays, and under-4s are free.

How do you plan a day by train and tour?

Take the Lilydale line from Flinders Street to the end. From there, board a half-day tour at Lilydale, or meet the bike tour, which collects riders at the station. You spend the day in the valley and come back to the train.

Check your drop-off when you book. The small-group half day returns you to Lilydale. The other half day finishes at Federation Square, which suits you if you are heading back to the city anyway.

Is a tour cheaper than driving?

It depends on who is counting. A car costs fuel and parking, and each cellar door charges for its tastings. A tour fare starts from $70 per person and lists the tastings it includes. The real saving is that everyone in your group can taste.

If only one of you drinks, driving may win. If four of you drink, a tour usually makes the day simpler, because nobody sits out and nobody has to find the next cellar door.
